Lidocaine and prilocaine are widely-used topical anesthetics which, when combined, are used to prevent pain during cosmetic or medical procedures on the skin. This medication should not be used on children under 12 years of age without doctor instruction.

When combined in equal quantities Lidocaine and prilocaine form an eutectic mixture, which means the compound solidifies at a lower temperature than either component would on its own. The most widely recognized brand-name product containing the two ingredients for general-purpose uses is EMLA, which stands for Eutectic Mixture of Local Anesthetics. It is also possible to buy Lidocaine and prilocaine under other brand names for specific purposes, and in some places patients have the option to buy Lidocaine and prilocaine as a generic.

Uses of Lidocaine and Prilocaine

The medication is available in a variety of forms, including creams, sprays and patches, which are useful in different scenarios. A great deal of Lidocaine and prilocaine use is in hospital settings prior to medical procedures, such as inserting catheters, performing skin grafts, or removing genital warts. Outside of medical facilities, people often buy Lidocaine and prilocaine to numb the skin for:

  • Minor cosmetic procedures, such as laser hair removal
  • Getting tattoos or piercings
  • Cleaning leg ulcers
  • Changing catheters
  • Administering injections
  • Delaying ejaculation

Equally important is knowing where not to use Lidocaine and prilocaine:

  • Mucous membranes including eyes, nose and mouth
  • Inside the vagina, opening of the penis, or rectum
  • Inside the ears
  • On open wounds
  • On infected skin

The product can produce serious side effects if too much enters the bloodstream. If it accidentally comes into contact with the above areas it should be quickly rinsed off. Ingestion of the medication calls for immediate medical attention. Note that Lidocaine and prilocaine are sometimes used on vaginal membranes, but this should only be done infrequently and with doctor instruction.

Administration

There is some variance between brands of Lidocaine and prilocaine mixtures, so the leaflet included with each product should be consulted before administration. Administration will also depend to some extent on the formulation being used:

  • Sprays are typically used to reduce sensation in the penis and thus delay ejaculation.
  • Patches can be used anywhere on the body which supports application.
  • Creams can be used anywhere on unbroken skin, particularly parts of the body which are difficult to apply a patch to. Creams may be covered a dressing if desired, or if needed to hold the medication in place.

Spray versions of the medication are somewhat unique among these products; the vast majority of patients buy Lidocaine and prilocaine sprays to address premature ejaculation. The spray is applied lightly to the penis and reduces sensation about 5 minutes later; it is not intended to completely numb the areas. Used properly it will not reduce sensation in the partner, even if condoms are not used.

Creams and patches are meant to completely numb the skin, and the extent to which they do so depends on how long the cream or patch is left on the skin, for up to 3 hours:

  • For minor procedures, such as administering an injection, the medication should be left on the skin for 1 hour.
  • For major procedures, such as skin graft harvesting, the medication should be left on the skin for 2 hours.
  • In some scenarios the medication may be left on the skin for 3 hours, but is unlikely to provide additional benefit if left on longer.

Numbing effects last for 1 to 2 hours, depending on the strength of the medication, length of time it was left on the skin, and individual patient response. Lengthy procedures, such as getting a large tattoo, may require re-application. Effects have a much shorter duration when used on mucous membranes of the vagina, but again the medication should only be applied to this are with doctor instruction.
